From North to South

Amy's ramblings. Once upon a time these ramblings pertained to my 5 months in Guatemala and Honduras. Then they followed the ebb and flow of my final semester in Alaska. From there things really went south ... to Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. After 8 months in the Andes, I fell back under Alaska's spell … working at a newspaper and wandering mountains. Now I'm somewhat south again ... in Jackson Hole, WY, teaching ski school on the clock and making fresh tracks off the clock.

Trekking photos part I

I got back a few days ago from a spectacular five day long trek in the mountains around Bariloche. Everything passed "re lindo." The weather was perfect, the people I met along the way were super friendly, the views were phenomenal and I was just plane happy. Here are some images from the trip...

I hiked a relatively obscure and untrampled trail with Chris, who's from Wales and quit his job to travel the world for a couple of years. We met in refugio (mountain hut) Jakob, had the same route planned, and decided to do it together. The 9 hour bushwack, scramble and slodge passed much quicker with company. Plus having two pairs eyes to find the random red dots marking the trail was really nice.

Our only way out was across this bridge that happened to have a big yellow "closed" sign plastered on to it. It was either the rickety bridge or a deep, fast moving, glacial river. We opted for the bridge and crossed without incident.

This is the face that my family and I climbed when we did the six day traverse in Dec. When we did it this face was covered in snow and the lake was frozen ... a month later and it's all melted.

There were some awesome views!

I spent two nights at Jakob. On the middle day I climbed a couple of nearby peaks with Guillermo, one of the people who runs the hut. This is Guillermo on top of the second peak.

Me, Marissa and Marissa's daughter. Marissa and Guillermo were the two people in charge of managing Refugio Jakob. I got to be friends with both of them last time I was there (with my family). When I showed up for a second visit, they just took me in. We all made and ate dinner together every night and like I said above, I spent my free day there hiking with Guillermo.
