How time flies
Time certainly does fly when you're having fun. This weekend I took a trip to Lago Atitlan, a beautiful lake with volcanoes spilling out of its edges. I stayed in this nice hostel that was right on the edge of the water. The highlights of the trip include a beautiful 3 hour hike that followed the lake and wound through many villages, an early morning run on a trail, free of bus exhaust (running in Xela is practically impossible) and sitting in a hammic under the sun for hours on end. What can I say, it was a really nice mini-vacation. I actually have to admit though that I was really glad to get back to Xela. When I stepped off the third chicken bus of the day, I let out a big sigh and thought "home." The hostel where I stayed on the lake was definitely a world of its own... great for a few days but not much more than that. It is amazes me to think of how many people come to Guatemala and only get to know the scene that goes on in that type of place. To me it completely misses the point of international travel. So now I am back, happily speaking spanish again and getting back into the swing of my volunteer work. I am starting the process of writing a big report on the information I gathered from all of my interveiws. Lots of work but I think it will prove to be interesting. This weekend I am off to Mexico. My three month visa is nearing expiration which means I need to leave the country to renew it. I will be traveling with my two really good friends, Felicitas and Justin, who are in the same boat as I am. Three months... can you believe it? I can't. Time does fly.
