From North to South

Amy's ramblings. Once upon a time these ramblings pertained to my 5 months in Guatemala and Honduras. Then they followed the ebb and flow of my final semester in Alaska. From there things really went south ... to Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. After 8 months in the Andes, I fell back under Alaska's spell … working at a newspaper and wandering mountains. Now I'm somewhat south again ... in Jackson Hole, WY, teaching ski school on the clock and making fresh tracks off the clock.

First reflections...

As I come into the last few weeks of my time here in Central America so many thoughts are flying through my head that concrete ideas seem to be hard to come by. Traveling through new areas everyday isn't actually helping this process either as all the new sights just give me that many more things to consider. One of my first post in this blog considered how I would view life in May at the close of my trip. Now it is May and I am beginning to contemplate what this whole wonderful, crazy experience has meant. I can pinpoint little things... my communication is much better, not just in that I can communicate in another language, but in that I have a much better sense of how to communicate in my own language. My patience has made leaps and bounds as well. When there is simply no alternative but to be patient, one does learn pretty quickly. Additionally I have learned many little skills and have a much better intellectual understanding of how globalization effects daily life (both positively and negatively) in another part of a world. These are the ideas that I am first starting to articulate... I am sure many more will take form as my reflections have time to ferment.
