From North to South

Amy's ramblings. Once upon a time these ramblings pertained to my 5 months in Guatemala and Honduras. Then they followed the ebb and flow of my final semester in Alaska. From there things really went south ... to Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. After 8 months in the Andes, I fell back under Alaska's spell … working at a newspaper and wandering mountains. Now I'm somewhat south again ... in Jackson Hole, WY, teaching ski school on the clock and making fresh tracks off the clock.

Checking in

Hello to all!

Although I'm having no success getting photos from the last few days up on my blog (slow Bolivian computers), Joshua just got some photos up on his blog from the beginning of our trip (Potosi, Bolivia and Buenos Aires, Argentina). His images are of course amazing and well-worth checking out!

Our tour through the Solar and high altitude desert was spectacular... as you'll all see as soon as I can find a computer not from the 1980's =) It was probably my highlight of the trip so far, although we've had such great experiences everywhere that's hard to say. The salt plane was truly unlike anything I've ever seen; it doesn't get much better than watching sunrise while soaking in hot springs; we stopped at green and red lakes full of flamingos, llamas and alpacas; the desert landscapes can only be described as vast and breathtaking; and the volcanic rocks laying in the sand made for an incredible bouldering playground.

Tomorrow at 6 a.m. we leave for the Argentine border, hopefully making it all the way to the city of Salta. If not, it's a night in the border town. No matter how bumby the road, or where we we end up it should be good times because we're going with Katya and Serafin (our Austrian friends who we've been traveling with for the last several days) and Salina, a really nice girl from Germany.

I've loved Bolivia, but I'm also excited about the idea of being back in Argentina. Argentines are definitely friendlier than Bolivians (with Bolivians it really is Jekyll and Hyde, they're either super friendly or super rude) and traveling just goes a bit smoother in Argentina. Nonetheless, we'll be leaving beautiful places, with good people and great memories behind.
