From North to South

Amy's ramblings. Once upon a time these ramblings pertained to my 5 months in Guatemala and Honduras. Then they followed the ebb and flow of my final semester in Alaska. From there things really went south ... to Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. After 8 months in the Andes, I fell back under Alaska's spell … working at a newspaper and wandering mountains. Now I'm somewhat south again ... in Jackson Hole, WY, teaching ski school on the clock and making fresh tracks off the clock.

Snowy Thompson Pass

I drove to Valdez last weekend to check out a peice of property. While I was there, I met up with/ stayed with a friend. The next day, on the way out of town, her room mate and I spent a few hours skiing/ boarding on Thompson Pass. It's the first time I've seen the pass in the winter ... and it can only be described as a backcountry skiers paradise. Pretty lines and magnificent peaks sprawl in every dirction. This time around I got a taste ... next time around I hope to take a big juicy bite.

Zippy and Bruno

Zippy's best buddy is his next door neighbor puppy, Bruno. Zippy and Bruno get to have play dates at least a few times each week, and when one of their families goes out of town, they get to stay at the other's house. Here's a few photos from when Bruno stayed with us for a couple of weeks in March.

Man-made meltdown

Jeff Evans and Preston Hughes (right) with the state Department of Transportation clear ice overflow off Eagle River Road March 18. During freeze-thaw cycles snow melt and ground water cause about a dozen problem spots on Eagle River Road, Hughes said. DOT highway maintenance crews oversee about 1,500 lane miles from Eklutna to Indian. Hughes asks residents to patient as crews work to remove ice hazards. “We can understand the public has their frustration, but they don’t know what we’re up against,” he said. “We can do what we can do with the funding we have.”
