Off to see what I can find out

I took a major leap Friday ... some may say off a cliff ... but I prefer to think of it as a leap of faith in life and the potential it holds. I turned in my two weeks notice at the Alaska Star and am headed to Jackson Hole for a winter of skiing, working and new adventures.

This weekend, as I've begun to think about preparations (what I'm going to take, how I want to travel down there, what I want to give away, what details I need to get in order, etc.), I've felt, well, me.

The side of me that loves randomness, adventure and a moment-by-moment life, has largely been stuffed into the back corner of a closet during the last several months. It's nice to take it out, dust it off and welcome it back into the fold. It balances out my responsible, dedicated and perfectionist side. When put together these two sides create a sort of wholeness.

I've learned so much from working at the Alaska Star, and the paper will always be near and dear to my heart. I believe strongly in the role of journalism in communities, cities, states, countries and the world ... and I am in many ways sad to no longer have that be part of my daily mission ... but when the voice from within speaks, it's always best to listen.

So off I go, in the words of Cat Stevens, "to see what I can find out."

Danish proverb

I just heated up some water to make myself tea before I go to bed...

And the saying on the tea bag -- you know how some fancier teas have quotes and words of wisdom written on the tag -- seemed, well, perfect.

It reads:

"He who would leap high must take a long run"

-Danish proverb (Good Earth white tea, vanilla blend)

I started my new job today as "associate editor" of the Alaska Star... and my thoughts are pretty well summed up by that Danish proverb... this is a "high leap" and one that will take "a long run"... but I'm excited for the trail ahead. I thrive on challenge, and if its a challenge that involves writing and publishing... even better!

Well, it's official!

Last week I put in my two weeks notice at Channel 2 and accepted the editor job at the Alaska Star.

Someone recently described my decision as "bold." And it definitely is that...but for the better, I'm convinced.

With a little reflection on life, one thing is obvious: some of the best decisions I've ever made have been bold...

Moving to Alaska, heading off to Central America, making a movie, wandering through South America...

Each of these experiences I treasure deeply and remember vividly!

So once again, I go out on a limb. It feels a bit shaky, and I feel a bit nervous, but step-by-step I gain confidence.

Over at Channel 2

I spend at least 36 hours per week here... so thought I'd give you all a glimps of life in the Channel 2 news station. There's some pretty cool stuff here... everything from the basement studio to the various rooms decked out in computers, screens, switch boards and the tons of other technology it takes to put on a broadcast. One thing's for sure, working in a news room is rarely boring.

Me "boothing" lasts night's 10 p.m. broadcast. When I booth it's my job to keep the show on time (to the second) and be the voice in the anchors' ears... give them time cues, let them know if anything changes, etc.
